Dog-Friendly Decorations

Safe Decorations When it comes to decorating for Christmas, safety is key. Opt for shatterproof ornaments and avoid tinsel, which can be hazardous if ingested. Secure your Christmas tree to prevent it from toppling over if your dog decides to investigate.

DIY Decorations Creating your own decorations can be a fun and safe way to include your dog in the festivities. Try making paw print ornaments using salt dough or clay. Simply press your dog's paw into the dough, bake according to the recipe, and paint once cooled. Another idea is to create a dog-themed wreath with photos of your pet, dog bones, and festive ribbon.

Personalized Photo Ornaments Add a personal touch to your Christmas tree with customized photo ornaments from Zazzle. These ornaments allow you to showcase your favorite photos of your dog, turning cherished memories into beautiful keepsakes. Not only do they make your tree look festive, but they also celebrate the special bond you share with your furry friend.

Festive Activities and Games

Holiday Walks and Adventures Winter walks can be magical with your dog. Bundle up and explore snowy trails or take a stroll through your neighborhood to enjoy the holiday lights. Don't forget to take plenty of photos to capture these special moments. Since my kids are older, they don’t have any interest in going to see the Christmas lights any more. So, going to see the Christmas lights has become a new tradition for Stormy and I. We drive around and look at all the beautiful lights. Luci loves playing ball, so throwing snowballs for her is a must when the weather gets snowy. Zelda loves our walks around the block to see the lights.

Indoor Activities If the weather outside is frightful, keep your dog entertained indoors with holiday-themed puzzle toys or a game of hide-and-seek using treats. You can also create an indoor obstacle course with festive decorations as hurdles.

Gifts for Your Dog

Gift Ideas Treat your dog to a special gift this Christmas. Consider toys that provide mental stimulation, cozy beds for those winter naps, or festive apparel like holiday sweaters. If your dog is a heavy chewer, I’ve compiled a list of my 10 favorite indestructible dog toys to help you get inspired.

Personalized Gifts Personalized items add a special touch. Custom dog tags, monogrammed stockings, and personalized blankets are thoughtful gifts that your dog (let’s face it, it’s you) will cherish.

Holiday Treats and Recipes

DIY Treats Homemade treats are a great way to spoil your dog this Christmas. Try making gingerbread cookies for dogs using dog-safe ingredients like whole wheat flour, molasses, pumpkin, and cinnamon. Another simple recipe is chicken and pumpkin —perfect for a festive and healthy treat. Here is the recipe

Store-Bought Recommendations If you're short on time, there are plenty of healthy and festive store-bought treats available. Look for treats made with natural ingredients and avoid those with artificial additives. Every year I buy a few Christmas themed treats to share with my dogs when the rest of the family is eating Christmas cookies. Here’s a link to my Idea list on Amazon with some of my favorite dog Christmas treats if you want to see the kinds that are out there.

Safety Tips for the Holiday Season

Holiday Hazards Certain holiday items can be dangerous for dogs. Avoid plants like poinsettias and mistletoe, which are toxic if ingested. Keep chocolate, grapes, and other harmful foods out of reach, and be cautious with small toys or decorations that could be swallowed. One year I thought Stormy got a hold of an ornament hook, it was a trip to the Emergency Vet that I really didn’t want to take. Thankfully, she didn’t ingest it, but I never did find that ornament hook.

Pet-Proofing Pet-proof your home by securing electrical cords, using pet gates to block off hazardous areas, and providing a quiet space for your dog to retreat to if the festivities become overwhelming.

Dressing Up Your Dog for Christmas

One of the most fun and festive ways to celebrate the holiday season with your furry friend is by dressing them up in adorable Christmas-themed outfits. From collars and bandanas to sweaters and headbands, there are plenty of options to make your dog look festive and cute.

Festive Collars and Bandanas A simple yet stylish way to dress up your dog is with a festive collar or bandana. Look for collars with holiday patterns like snowflakes, reindeer, or plaid. Bandanas are another great option and can be easily tied around your dog's neck for a quick and comfortable festive look.

Cozy Christmas Sweaters Keep your dog warm and stylish with a cozy Christmas sweater. These come in a variety of designs, from classic red and green patterns to sweaters adorned with holiday characters like Santa Claus or snowmen. Not only will your dog look adorable, but they’ll also stay warm during your holiday outings. Keep in mind that not all dogs like wearing clothing. Zelda hates it, so she just wears her Christmas collar and bandana. She still looks just as cute.

Cute Headbands from the Dollar Tree For an extra touch of holiday cheer, check out the Dollar Tree for their human headbands, which make perfect little accessories for dogs. These headbands are often adorned with festive elements like reindeer antlers, elf ears, or Santa hats. They fit Zelda and Stormy perfectly, and they make an instant holiday photo op.

Dressing up your dog not only adds to the festive atmosphere but also makes for some fantastic holiday photos. Just remember to ensure that any clothing or accessories are comfortable and safe for your pet.

Sharing the Joy: Dog Photo Christmas Cards

Speaking about dressing up your dogs, it’s so much fun to get them dressed up and then take some cute Christmas pictures. You can then add those pictures to your holiday cards.

Photo Tips Capturing the perfect holiday photo of your dog can be challenging but rewarding. Use natural light, keep sessions short, and have LOTS of treats on hand to capture your dog's attention. I like to try to get my dogs to pose in front of the tree to add to the festive ambiance.

Including Your Dog in Family Traditions

Traditions Incorporate your dog into your family traditions by including them in gift opening, holiday photos, and festive meals (with dog-safe foods). These moments create lasting memories and make your dog feel like a true part of the family.

All 3 of my dogs have figured out how to open presents, and it adds joy to the day to watch them open their very own gifts.

New Traditions Start new traditions centered around your dog, such as an annual holiday dog walk, a festive photoshoot, or even a special holiday meal prepared just for them.
