🍗 Are Chicken and Pumpkin Safe for Dogs?
Yes! Both chicken and plain pumpkin are great for dogs. Chicken is a lean source of protein, and pumpkin is packed with fiber and nutrients that support digestion. Just be sure to use plain canned pumpkin and not the sweetened pie mix.
💡 Bonus: Use These Treats in Enrichment Toys
Because they’re soft and small, these treats are perfect for puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, and DIY enrichment toys. I even use them in my homemade licking mats (frozen in muffin tins—check out that video too!).

🐾 Why I Love These Training Treats
These treats check all the boxes:
Made with real chicken and pumpkin
Soft enough for training (especially when fresh)
No weird ingredients or preservatives
Saves money
Baked right at home with love ❤️
They’ve become my go-to for hiking, leash training, and just everyday “good dog!” rewards.
🧾 Ingredients
You only need a few basic ingredients:
1/2 cup cooked chicken, shredded or finely chopped
1/2 cup canned pumpkin (plain, not pie filling)
1 egg
1 teaspoon of olive oil (optional)
1 cup of water or broth (I used the broth that I cooked the chicken in, but water works too.)
1/4 cup flour (I made oat flour, but have used all purpose flour too)
This recipe makes close to 600 training treats or 1 1/2 silicone molds FULL of treats.
To keep these chicken training treats uniform in size, I used a silicone treat mold I found on Amazon (linked below). You don’t need a mold, but it definitely made the process quicker and less messy. Honestly, it was such a good deal that I figured it would pay for itself after just a couple of batches considering how pricey store-bought treats can be!

🍽️ How to Make Homemade Dog Treats
Step 4: Bake for 20 minutes or until set and lightly golden. 20 minutes will make perfectly chewy training treats. I like mine a little crunchy so I can carry them easily in my training pouch. if that’s you, you can turn the oven off and let the treats stay in if for another 20-30 minutes
Step 5: Let cool completely, then refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for longer storage.
Pro tip: If you don’t have a mold, you can just use 1/2 cup of broth and make it into a dough. Then, shape small balls or flatten spoonfuls onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Step 2: Mix all ingredients in a food processor until you get a thick, pourable mixture. The consistency should be like a pancake batter. You can really add ingredients to the food processor in any order, but I went flour, chicken, oil, 1/4 cup of the broth, pumpkin, then the rest of the water to get a pancake consistency.
Step 3: Pour the mixture into a silicone dog treat mold like this one on Amazon (affiliate link). Then spread it out until all of the mold is full.
