Ever feel like your dog’s mealtime could use a little excitement? Food toppers might be just the thing! These tasty additions can turn an ordinary bowl of kibble into a mouthwatering feast for your furry friend, and they come with some great benefits too. Let’s dive into what makes food toppers awesome, explore some popular options, and talk about how to introduce them to your dog’s diet.

Why Food Toppers Are a Game-Changer

Make Meals Irresistible: If your dog turns up their nose at their plain kibble, a food topper can make their meal much more appealing. This is actually why I started using food toppers. Miss Luci can be a bit picky, but if I throw some eggs on her kibble, she gobbles it right up.

Boosts Hydration: Adding wet food or bone broth can help keep your dog hydrated, especially if they’re not big water drinkers. All summer long, I make sure to add either water or bone broth to my dog's kibble because I'm always worried they aren't getting enough water.

Nutritional Kick: Toppers can pack extra vitamins, minerals, and probiotics to support your dog’s health.

Manage Weight: Low-calorie toppers like plain Greek yogurt or veggies can help keep your dog feeling full without adding too many extra calories.

Senior Dog Support: Older dogs might lose some interest in food as they age. Toppers can help stimulate their appetite and make mealtime more enjoyable.

We love using toppers with our food so much that I've decided to start a series on YouTube with simple dog food toppers that you can add to your dogs kibble. You can check out the first in the series below. Make sure to check out the whole playlist for simple toppers that you more than likely already have in your kitchen.

Tasty Topper Ideas to Try

There’s no shortage of options when it comes to food toppers for dogs. Here are some that are popular with pups.

  • Wet Food: A little canned dog food mixed in can add flavor and moisture to dry kibble.

  • Bone Broth: Nutritious and full of collagen, bone broth is a healthy and delicious addition.

  • Fresh Veggies: Grated carrots, zucchini, or sweet potatoes add crunch and nutrients.

  • Fruit: Blueberries, apples, pineapple, and canned pumpkin are some of the fruits my dogs like. They are low in calories and high in nutrients. So they make a great food topper for dog's kibble.

  • Plain Greek Yogurt: Packed with protein and probiotics, just be sure to pick unsweetened versions.

  • Canned Tuna, Sardines, or Salmon: High in protein and omega-3s, just make sure it’s packed in water, not oil.

  • Kefir: This fermented milk product is great for gut health thanks to its probiotics.

  • Eggs: Scrambled or boiled eggs are an excellent source of protein and healthy fats.

  • Commercial Toppers: If convenience is important to you, there are plenty of commercial toppers available in various flavors. I’ve created an Idea List for you on Amazon with some of my favorites. You can check it out HERE. (affiliate link)

Just keep in mind, not all human food is safe for dogs. So be sure to do your research before adding a food as a topper.

How to Introduce Food Toppers to Your Dog’s Diet

When you’re ready to spice up your dog’s meals, here’s how to do it.

  1. Start Small: Add just a little bit of the new topper to their regular food.

  2. Watch for Reactions: Keep an eye on your dog for any signs of digestive issues, like diarrhea or vomiting.

  3. Increase Gradually: If all goes well, slowly add more of the topper over the next few days.

  4. Mix It Up: Rotate between different toppers to keep things interesting and ensure a balanced diet.

  5. All dogs aren't the same: With so many toppers to choose from, keep in mind that every dog won't like every topper. So try different things until you find your dog's favorite.

  6. Remove some kibble: When you are feeding your dogs toppers in addition to their kibble, you want to make sure you don't over feed them. I remove about 20% of their kibble when I'm feeding them dog food toppers.

Homemade Food Topper Recipes

Want to get creative in the kitchen? Here are a few easy homemade topper recipes:

  • Lean Protein Topper: Cooked and shredded chicken or turkey breast mixed with plain Greek yogurt and grated carrot.

  • Veggie Medley Topper: Cooked and mashed sweet potato with finely chopped green beans and a dollop of pumpkin puree.

  • Fruity Surprise Topper: Mashed ripe banana, a handful of blueberries, and plain yogurt.

What About My Dogs?

I currently love adding Zesty Paws Salmon Oil to their kibble. Recently, Furvor sent us a bottle of Furvor Bone Broth to try, and they go crazy for it! I usually drizzle the salmon oil over their kibble and serve the bone broth mixed with their food. I also will give them chicken, eggs and sardines quite frequently. I've got them both on my Amazon Storefront in my Dog Food Topper Idea List (affiliate link). They also just LOVE scrambled eggs.

So, if you want to add a little excitement to your dog's meal time, don't hesitate to give toppers a try. Then come over to Facebook, and let us know your dog's favorites.
