Introduction

Starved Rock State Park, with its stunning canyons and scenic trails, is a haven for hiking enthusiasts and their furry companions in Oglesby, Illinois. One of our most memorable hikes at Starved Rock took place in early March when the St. Louis waterfall was partially frozen. The terrain was a cool mix of ice and mud near the canyon and waterfall, creating a magical landscape. Stormy, our adventurous dog, loved climbing over the snow and ice. We've returned many times since, and it remains one of our favorite spots for dog-friendly hikes.

You can see from the picture that Stormy enjoyed the rugged and icy terrain of St. Louis Canyon. Don't let the ice fool you though, it was almost 70 degrees that day. So the ice was melting rapidly. Plus, only the areas near the waterfall had any ice remaining. Most of the trail was dry and clear.

Starved Rock State Park offers a variety of dog-friendly trails, each with its own unique beauty and challenges. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Illinois Canyon Trail: This popular trail offers stunning views of the Illinois River Valley and diverse wildlife. Though it's a bit steep in some areas, the effort is well worth it.

  • St. Louis Canyon Trail: A shorter and less strenuous trail, St. Louis Canyon is perfect for a leisurely hike with your dog, offering picturesque views and beautiful rock formations.

  • Ottawa Canyon Trail: For a more secluded and peaceful hike, Ottawa Canyon Trail provides a tranquil escape with its serene surroundings and natural beauty.

Hiking St. Louis Canyon with Your Dog

The St. Louis Canyon Trail is a must-do for any dog owner visiting Starved Rock. The dramatic canyon walls, rushing water, and unique rock formations make it a truly unforgettable experience. Here are a few tips for hiking St. Louis Canyon with your dog:

  • Leash Control: Always keep your dog on a sturdy leash, especially near the edge of the canyon, to ensure their safety and the safety of other hikers.

  • Water Breaks: Bring plenty of fresh water and a portable water bowl for your dog. Frequent water breaks are essential, particularly in warmer weather.

  • Watch the Weather: Check the weather forecast before heading out. Icy trails can be particularly hazardous in winter, so proceed with caution.

Tips for Hiking with Your Dog at Starved Rock

Before you head out, make sure to check out the official Starved Rock Facebook page. Due to the unpredictability of the weather and terrain at the park, there can be trail closures. They keep their page updated with any changes and happenings in the park.

The park is massive and paperless, so download their map before going. You can get it HERE. They do have QR codes on trail signs, but I’ve found my internet connection to be spotty while at the park, so it’s best to have a map before you go so that you have a general idea of where you are going.

Trail Etiquette

  • Respect Other Hikers: Yield to other hikers and keep your dog close.

  • Clean Up After Your Dog: Dispose of waste properly to keep trails clean.

  • Stay on the Trails: There are lots of bluffs and canyons that could be unsafe.Trails are clearly marked so just look for trail signs if you are unsure.

  • Keep Your Dog on a Leash: Especially near cliffs and water for safety.

  • Don’t Let Your Dog Drink the Water: It’s against park rules for dogs to drink water in the Illinois River, creeks, or waterfalls at Starved Rock.

Safety Considerations

  • Watch for Wildlife: Keep an eye out for deer, raccoons, and squirrels, which can be distracting for dogs.

  • Check Trail Conditions: Look for trail closures or hazards before you go. The mud at Starved Rock is no joke. Trails can get very slippery.

  • Be Mindful of Weather Conditions: Avoid extreme heat or cold to ensure a comfortable hike.

  • Navigating Stairs: There are a lot of stairs. So make sure your dog is up to the challenge. Also, be cautious with metal stairs, which can be slippery. You might have to carry smaller dogs if it becomes too much for them.

Timing Your Hike

Go Early: To avoid the crowds, it's best to start your hike early in the morning. This not only ensures a more peaceful experience but also provides cooler temperatures for your dog. As the day goes on, the park can get crowded, and it can be hard to navigate the stairs in many areas with your dog.

Conclusion

With its stunning scenery, challenging trails, and opportunities for adventure, it's a must-visit destination in Ogelsby, Illinois.
